TROQ

This great sounding acronym relates to a move by government (through NZQA) to streamline and simplify the qualifications system. It stands for ‘Targeted Review of Qualifications’ and the focus of the review is to reduce the duplication and proliferation of qualifications. The aim is to ensure credible and useful qualifications are available to learners, employers and other interested parties.

A meeting on 26th January 2012 in Wellington got the review ball rolling for the sport, fitness and outdoors recreation community. The meeting was hosted by Skills Active and was attended by many organisations involved and interested in qualifications, including Outdoors New Zealand.

The focus of the meeting was to establish the process to be used for the review. A key outcome of the meeting was the formation of a Governance Committee. This committee will oversee the work of three working groups; one each for sport, fitness and outdoors recreation. Outdoors New Zealand is a member of the Governance Committee and will advocate for the interests of the outdoors community throughout the review process.

The working groups are yet to be finalised. Communication and consultation paths need to be organised. We are underway with this review but it’s still early days. You will be informed as much as possible about what is happening and be able to put your views forward.
